Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis (trich) is caused by a parasite. It is more common in women and can be passed during sex.
Symptoms
- Often no symptoms in men
- In women: frothy yellow-green discharge, itching, pain when urinating
- In men: discharge from the penis, irritation inside the penis
- Discomfort during sex
How it spreads
- Vaginal sex without a condom
- Sharing sex toys
- Not commonly spread through oral or anal sex
Testing
Swab from the vagina or urethra, or urine test in some cases.
Treatment
Usually treated with a single dose of metronidazole or tinidazole. Partners should be treated at the same time.
What to do next
Get tested at your GP, sexual health clinic, or Family Planning. Testing is often free at public sexual health services.
Retest in 3 months if you have ongoing risk. Avoid unprotected sex until 7 days after you and your partners have started treatment.
