Mycoplasma genitalium

Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) is an increasingly recognised bacterial STI that can cause urethritis and pelvic infection.

Symptoms

  • Often no symptoms
  • Discharge from the penis or vagina
  • Pain when urinating
  • Pain during sex or in the pelvis
  • Bleeding after sex

How it spreads

  • Vaginal and anal sex without a condom

Testing

NAAT test on urine or swab. Not all clinics routinely test — ask your sexual health provider.

Treatment

Antibiotics, but some strains are resistant. Follow-up testing may be needed to confirm cure.

Get tested at your GP, sexual health clinic, or Family Planning. Testing is often free at public sexual health services.

Retest in 3 months if you have ongoing risk. Avoid unprotected sex until 7 days after you and your partners have started treatment.
